William Henry James was an English "gentleman of superior mechanical talents."[1]

In 1824, he patented a road steam carriage and built one in 1824 - 1825. in 1829, he built a three-ton machine that carried 15 passengers.

This Scottish stamp is one of a series of Land Speed Record vehicles. The James is said to have moved at 2 miles per hours.
