Arm & Hammer Baking Soda was promoted to automobile owners in the early 1920s if not before. Today, some steam car experts recommend adding baking soda to the water tank to help avoid boiler deposits.
Although this trade catalogue does not mention steam automobiles, it does speak to retarded water circulation due to scale inside the radiator.
